Sun-Times Contradicts Self...Again
By JOHN F. KUCZAJ
In what is becoming a regular occurrence, the Sun-Times editorial pages continue to contradict the sensational headlines they have been splashing on their front page. Personally, I'm growing tired of the St. Sabina/Sports League saga-it's become apparent that the story contained more hot air than substance.
Jack Higgins delivered the perfect summation of this whole mess in Wednesday's Sun-Times:
Panel 1: (Picture of Fr. Pfleger wearing a halo and with rays of light shining on him) "I'm Father Michael Pfleger"
Panel 2: (Fr. Pfleger's halo a bit smaller) "I Fight Racists"
Panel 3: (Fr. Pfleger's halo very small, natural light around him, shadows creeping upward) "and if I'm fighting you…"
Panel 4: (Fr. Pfleger's halo disappears, his hands folded in front of him and he's almost totally engulfed in darkness) "you must be a racist"
Amen.
On Thursday, the paper runs an editorial stating that Fleger's "Noble goal needs better guidance " and mentions that the 32 murders in that area just might have made the parents' fears justified.
Huh?
Is this how it is in Canada? Play both sides of the fence?
That would seem to be against the traditional newspaper way of doing things as well as diametrically opposite the supposed "objective" television news media. What kind of screwed up newspaper takes up both sides of an issue after inflaming the thing in the first place?
What's most amazing to me is how an editorial board that can seemingly endorse both sides of this racially charged issue could have the brass balls to be 100% anti-Palestinian when it comes to Middle East issues. Neither issue is pure good vs. pure evil, but one of them is nearly always portrayed that way.

Check out Michael Miner's Hot Type, the Weekly Reader's media column. It's the best written, most thought-provoking media column I've ever read. Check out his back issues for some interesting info on the sad state of the Sun-Times. Yow!
