Return of the Weather Bunny
By JOHN F. KUCZAJ

Channel 32 is running promos about their new morning news weatherbabe. Artsy camera moves of Michelle Leigh dance on the screen as the Isley Brothers' song "Who's that Lady" plays (Who's that Lady...Beautiful Lady...Lovely Lady...).

Two questions come to mind:
1. Is Channel 32 promoting the alleged beauty of their new morning weather girl in order to distract us from poor weathercasting? Why not just say it?: "Other stations may tell you they have accurate and professional weather teams-Channel 32's morning weather girl is pretty!
2. I wonder what the female journalists at Channel 32 think about this. Maybe they figure being a weatherperson isn't real journalism, so it's just fine to promote superficially. The why isn't Channel 32 promoting the handsome Rick DiMaio to the female viewers in the same way? Of course, Rick's a legitimate meteorologist and to promote him that way could be degrading.

Of course, the biggest problem I have with the promo is that Michelle Leigh may be attractive to some (if you're into that kind of look), but I can count at least 5 other ladies at Channel 32 who are much more attractive than Leigh and deserve much more promotion.
You know, at the top of the list is......ah, nevermind!

Talk Show Hosts = Awful Talk Show Guests
By JOHN F. KUCZAJ

With almost all big news operations based in New York City and the fact that I, like most native Chicagoans, hate New York-the New York/East Coast bias in news is sometimes so pervasive as to make me sick. When those few opportunities come up to hear a voice from Chicago, I think the powers that be make a concerted effort to call on someone with particularly bizarre views or an odd demeanor.

Such was the case Friday night on Fox News' "The O'Reilly Factor" with guest host John Gibson. The topic was (Jesse Jackson's booty call) Karin Sanford's impending appearance on 20/20 that night. The guest that Gibson talked to was WVON-AM's Cliff Kelley.

Kelley basically thought that Sanford's appearance on 20/20 was wrong, but instead of actually justifying this thought, he apparently decided to continually dodge Gibson's questions and talk over Gibson at every chance. He would NOT shut up. Had Kelley been a caller to his own show, he would have been quickly hung up on because he was so rude. I can only wonder if an "O'Reilly Factor" producer was looking to book a total buffoon who was incapable of rational conversation. That's how Kelley came across to me. I would say that Kelley skillfully skirted questions, but Gibson repeatedly tried to get some straight answers out of him with no success as Kelley prattled on and on.

Kelley's goofy 32-teeth grin also reminded me of that kid in the TV commercials who keeps showing everyone his back before a race. Have you seen this? He's so annoying that you are hoping someone punches him 15 times in the face to wipe away the goofy grin? Then you find out he's retarded, which is supposed to make you feel sorry for him, but you still desperately want someone to slap him around? That was my reaction to Kelley. He was so annoying and uncooperative that I was hoping someone would bitch-slap some sense into him. Damn, I was mad!

Alas, it was not to be.
And so, another nutcase from Chicago is heard from.
